Don't Let Your Shipment Rot at Customs
As a sourcing partner, we’ve seen it happen time and again: clients are eager to get the products they need, but overlook one critical detail. What is it? The destination import certification. Shipments may get delayed for weeks if it’s found out too late before shipping, or worse, may get stuck at customs, leaving buyers wishing they had done their homework.
Today, let’s talk about why clarifying certification requirements should be your important step in cross-border procurement.
Different countries might have vastly different standards for the same product. Take electrical items for example. The EU needs CE marking, while the US demands FCC compliance. Japan requires PSE, Korea needs KC, and many Middle Eastern countries mandate SASO/COC. A product that sails through customs in one country might be completely restricted in another without the right paperwork.

It gets more complicated. Even within a single country, requirements can vary by region or intended use. Take Australian for example, some clients need RCM, while others say they don’t need it at all, or just some parts like regular bulbs need RCM.
Moreover, a consumer-grade appliance faces different standards than an industrial machine or a medical device, even if they look identical.
CE certificate is now common in China, but others are unavailable unless you pay to get it, like UL and COC. If any of your products may need these certificates, it’s really important to know it in the early stage of your procurement process, as buyers need to pay extra to get the certificate.

Generally, regulations for general goods are looser, but for items like food contact materials, toys, or medical devices, the scrutiny increases exponentially. In some cases, even a slight change in material or function can alter the entire certification process.
So confirming certifications is necessary. It’s about how you control costs, protect your timeline, and secure your bottom line.
